Believe it or not, unless you are lucky enough to come from one of the beautiful islands of New Zealand, you will require a visa as well as a valid passport if you wish to gain entry into Australia. Even if you only wish to holiday there for a short period of time, a holiday visa is an essential, or else you will be turned away. The visa that most holiday makers will require is the ETA tourist visa. ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authority and reflects the ever advancing levels of technology being devoted to the security of Australian borders. This helps to ensure that the rigorous controls, set out by the immigration policy of the Australian government, are enforced.
This particular holiday visa takes the form of an electronic record that can be accessed by appropriate personnel when you go on holiday using the information contained in your passport. This is in contrast to the more conventional stamp or label on a page of your passport, still used by many countries. A holiday visa for Australia allows visits of up to three months each time. It is permissible for holders to visit Australia a number of times in one year but no single visit can last longer than the maximum period of three months.
There are a number of constraints associated with this Australian holiday visa. Unlike with visas such as the working holiday visa, holders of an ETA tourist visa are not by any means permitted to work in the country for any period of time. It is also imperative that you apply for your holiday visa before leaving for Australia. Moreover, it is highly advisable to wait until after you have been issued your visa before booking your tickets. Holders of the ETA tourist visa are allowed to study in Australia but the period of studying is again restricted to just three months. If you wish to enrol on a longer course and the main purpose of your trip is study then it is recommended that you apply for a student visa rather than entering Australia on the pretence of a holiday.
