If you are planning to visit Australia for the purpose of tourism or to visit friends or family (for less than 90 days), then you should apply for the Australia Tourist Visa ETA (976). If you do not hold a Visa then you will be refused entry to Australia (except Australian & New Zealand Citizens).

Once the Australia Tourist Visa (ETA) is granted, it is valid for 12 months. If your passport expiry is less than 12 months then the validity for the Australia Tourist Visa (ETA) would be for the life of the passport. You can stay in Australia for up to 3 months on each visit within the 12 months from when the visa is granted.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) applications have replaced the traditional visa label in your passport. The ETA is issued electronically and details of approved applicants are recorded on the Australian Governments database.

• The Tourist Visa (ETA) is valid for 12 months from the date it is granted.
• You are permitted multiple stays of up to 3 months over the 12 month period.
• Applicants must be outside Australia to apply.
• You are NOT permitted to work on this visa.
• You must not have any criminal convictions.
• You can study in Australia on an Australia Tourist Visa (ETA) as long as the course you undertake does not exceed more than 3 months in length.
• You must have a minimum of 6 months validity on your passport.

Note. If you change your passport before travelling to Australia you will need to reapply for a new ETA. Your ETA Visa is electronically attached to your current passport and can not be transferred.

How will I know if my ETA Visa application has been granted?
You will receive email confirmation within 3 business days. In normal circumstances you will receive confirmation within 1 business day, however there will be further delays to the processing of your application; if it is referred by the Australian Government or the applicant has criminal convictions.
Is there a charge if my Visa application is referred or declined?
There is a £15 processing fee for applying for an ETA Tourist Visa. If the Australian Government refers or declines your application the fee still stands and is non refundable. A referred application does not necessarily mean your application will be declined, the Australia High Commission may require further information.
