COVID-19 India: With cases of covid in the country showing a steady decline, India may soon reopen its doors to welcome foreign tourists for the first time after a good 1.6 years, officials have revealed. With the aim of reviving the tourism, hospitality and aviation sectors in the country, the first five foreign tourists will be issued visas for free. India’s economy has been hit hard by lockdowns caused by covid since March 2020, as the PTI news agency reported.

Senior officials from the Union’s Interior Ministry are in talks with stakeholders who will decide on the date and modalities for the reopening of borders to foreign tourists. An official announcement should be made in the next 10 days, according to the document issued by the Interior Ministry. The decision due to the decline in COVID-19 cases in the country. India reported 30,773 new cases on Sunday while active cases fell to 3.32 lakh. India’s COVID-19 vaccine coverage also crossed 80 crore on Saturday.

The free visa for tourists will be issued until March 31, 2022 or the issuance of a five lakh visa, whichever comes first. The total financial implication for this would be Rs 100 crore. “The free visa transfer should entice short-term tourists to visit India,” the official said, as reported in PTI. “The cost for a one-month e-tourist visa is country specific but is approximately $ 25. The one-year multiple-entry e-tourist visa fee is approximately $ 40”, a- he added. The e-tourist visa was suspended from March. 2020 due to the covid pandemic.

Interior Ministry officials also said that tourists will be allowed under certain conditions, such as those vaccinated will be allowed to enter at the borders.
