DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Just over a week since Public Health Dayton Montgomery County announced its last vaccine incentive, and they are reporting a massive surge in interest.
âBefore the offer of a $ 100 gift card was made, we were receiving between 20 and 25 people per vaccination clinic,â said Dan Suffoletto, public information specialist. âNow we get over 100 [people] and more at each clinic.
Anyone receiving their first dose of vaccine is eligible for a $ 100 Visa gift card, which they can use for anything they see fit.
âI live comfortably, but every time you throw a dollar my way, I have to come and get it,â said Zachary Malone, who first came to a clinic for the shot on Friday. “One hundred dollars is a really big incentive because the people who don’t want it but need it, they’re going to come here and get it.”
For the more than 200,000 people in the county who have already received their injection before the incentive and are therefore ineligible, Suffoletto says they shouldn’t feel like they haven’t missed a thing.
âYou might have missed your opportunity for the $ 100; However, you received protection much earlier and much longer, âhe said. “This benefit of being protected, of not being hospitalized, of not getting very sick … which is worth a lot more than $ 100.”
Still, Suffoletto says more than 800 people got most of the 1,000 cards they had. The incentive is made possible by funds from the Ohio Department of Health. While Suffoletto says he plans to provide more visa cards in the future, unvaccinated people should no longer delay getting vaccinated or hope for a better incentive.
“There is no guarantee that there will be other incentives beyond what is already offered, so the best thing is that people get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
